Participants should either have taken the course “CBTC Fundamentals” or have an equivalent basic knowledge of CBTC Fundamentals

Your benefits
  • Acquire a good understanding of the protections and operational features of CBTC system as well as different generic indications of Automatic Train Supervision System (ATS) and Train Operators Display (TOD)
  • Broaden your know-how of Data Communication System (DCS) and interfaces provided to external and on board systems
  • Gain valuable insights into the operation of CBTC and the implementation of CBTC in suburban railways and existing networks
  • Improve your knowledge about the infrastructure needed to implement CBTC and acquire a good understanding of the functioning of CBTC
  • Increase your understanding of the challenges of operating CBTC rolling stock on non-CBTC lines
  • Enhance your understanding of different Automatic Train Control (ATC) and Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems
  • Apply your knowledge about CBTC comparing it with other automated train control systems
Course content
In modern railway signaling systems Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) can mainly be used in urban railway lines, either for metro or heavy rail systems. CBTC systems are widely accepted worldwide as they help towards achieving maximum capacity, minimum headway and maintaining safety requirements.

This online training provides an overview of the operational features of CBTC and gives you a general understanding of the functioning of the system including ATS and Onboard Systems and Failure Management. You will also learn about how implementations of modern CBTC systems work.

You will learn more on how to ensure the interoperability of CBTC rolling stock on non-CBTC lines. Besides analyzing the required infrastructure and workforce, you will look at possible challenges that might affect the communication between the existing and new systems.

In addition, this course provides you with an overview of different ATP and ATS systems to ensure an efficient and safe rail operation. It looks at the benefits and advantages of these systems compared with CBTC. By analyzing a variety of scenarios under expert guidance, you will be able to deduce where challenges of implementing CBTC systems lie. This training will also help you to compare between heavy rail system ATC/ATP and CBTC signalling.
  • CBTC system-Protections provided by the CBTC system, such as Interlocking and Fall back System
  • DCS overview and its functionlities
  • Overview of ATS systems, architecture, generic indications
  • Main Operators and their responsibilities
  • Train Operator Display - generic indications and their interpretation. General functionalities available
  • ATC modes: Normal & degraded modes with protections available in different modes, Depot to Mainline Mode Transition
  • Special Operations (ATB, Reverse Operation, Single line operation on Mainline, Rescue)
  • Signaling Failure Management (on board and track side)
  • Risk analysis including reliability evaluation
  • Overview of Interfaces provided and their functions
  • Implementation of CBTC in Suburban Railway (urban trains / metro / subway) into existing networks, Challenges of implementing CBTC systems
  • Interoperability of CBTC Rolling Stock on non-CBTC lines with respect to:
    • Vehicle procurement
    • Infrastructure development
